Josh Ku | Interview

"I love big wave surfing because it tests your own limits. Its not a competition where  and your worried about who’s out there. More of a competition with yourself, on your own mental experiences."

Haling from Sydney and growing up in the ocean, Josh Ku is one of the most recognisable figure in the Foil-surf scene today and he's a part of our Follow Family. Let's have a chat shall we Josh?

- Joshua, please tell us a little bit about yourself, who are you, where are you from, and what’s your  favourite  Australian snack?

Josh Ku. 33 years old from Maroubra, Sydney. Grew up here always been around the ocean, surfing, spear fishing, and now foiling. Favourite snack? Aww right f*&k. I don’t wanna sound stock standard, so... wagon wheel.

- We know you’re foiling a lot  lately, but  you’re actually someone that surfs really really big waves, tell us a little bit about your big wave surfing, the wave you had 2022 at  Deadman’s in Manly and why you love big wave surfing and foiling so much?

I love big wave surfing because it tests your own limits. Its not a competition where  and your worried about who’s out there. More of a competition with yourself, on your own mental experiences. I like to test my limits and these days I only get that adrenalin rush from big waves. That same thing then translates from surfing to foiling. It’s the learning experience, that’s what makes it so addictive. Its leaps and bounds trying to connect it all together. I get that same rush from long distance down winding now. Testing my body and pushing my mind to the limits.

- We’re super happy that  you’re a part of our follow family now!  Why did you choose follow and what are you loving in the follow range?

I love how follow prides themselves for the quality of gear, how they have made specific gear for foiling and water sports that’s developed by the team. But not only that all the traveling I do, the stuff is perfect. I don’t need heaps of clothing and wetsuits when I travel, I already have that dragging a foilbag across the world. I just need a few solid items that are versatile and that’s what follow does best.

"I’m wearing every day on the roof for work, they are covered in dirt and crap but they are still holding up perfect and I’ve been wearing them daily for 6 months."

- You did  some work with us for this initial range, how did you find working with us and on the range?

Useless. I got a down winding vest sample with no hydro pack hahahaha. A lot of the development was already done, Its more that the new gear is great for all water sports and life I’m still wearing the same of boardies from the water straight to work. The gear just lasts, I have a sample of the new all day shorts. I thought because they are so soft and breathable that they would wear out and break, but I’m wearing every day on the roof for work, they are covered in dirt and crap but they are still holding up perfect and I’ve been wearing them daily for 6 months.

- What´s next for Josh Ku? Any plans in the near future?

Big plans, a trip every month planned. Florida, Chile, 3 trips to Hawaii then back to mainland USA. I’ve also just started working for Code foils as the marketing manager and also a team rider. Super excited to be involved with the new generation foil company, owned and run by friends and foil nuts like myself. It’s also cool to be involved with another aussie company foil drive. They are keeping me on the water longer when the waves are flat. So basically every aussie brand I’m involved with.

- Thank you so much for your time Josh!
